Level 2 - Intermediate interpreters are able to interpret a significant portion of the message clearly. They are able to function in many situations meaningfully and receptively.

Level 3 and 4 - Interpreters are not considered as possessing adequate skills to be deemed qualified for most interpreting assignments.

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) certifies Level V (Master) and Level IV (Advanced).

The Level V Certification indicates that the interpreter is a master interpreter. The interpreter very rarely demonstrates difficulty in any interpreting situation.

Level IV (Advanced) - The Level IV Certification indicates that the interpreter is an advanced interpreter. The interpreter does very well in voice-to-sign. The interpreter demonstrates little difficulty in sign-to-voice. The interpreter may demonstrate peculiarities in sign style, choice of signs used; however, the interpreter demonstrates the skill necessary for just about any interpreting situation.

While all language interpreting is mentally taxing, sign language interpreting adds a physical dimension due to its nature as a visual language. As a result, for many interpreting assignments, sign language interpreters work in pairs. Team interpreters alternate interpreting duties to reduce mental and physical fatigue, reduce the potential for errors in the interpretation by monitoring and making adjustments as necessary to ensure accuracy.

Interpreters have the art to translate orally while translators interpret written text from one language to another.

According to the person language ability, aptitude, capacity & understanding and individual will chose to become an interpreter or a translator. However, very seldom an interpreter is a translator and/or a translator an interpreter. Very few people are trained and certified to accomplish both skills on a professional level.

Interpreters have the skills to translate in each paired language in presence without using any type of reference source. An experienced interpreter is also savvy trained in political, religious and colloquialisms issues surrounding our world today. There are three types of interpreters, simultaneous, consecutive & sight translation.

Simultaneous interpreters must listen and process the words the source language is conveying then outputting the translation into the target language. In most cases 2 simultaneous interpreters will be required.

Consecutive interpreters must wait for the speaker to pause after every sentence or phrase, enabling the interpreter to render his translation. In most cases 1 consecutive interpreter will meet the requirements.

Sight Translators must have the oral skills of an interpreter and the reading and translation skills of a translator. The sight translator will read a text in the source language and deliver it into the target language.

Translators have the skills and ability to understand the subject matter of the source language and a profound understanding of the audience and the readers where the target language translation will be utilized. It is essential for a translator to fully understand the context of the text as well as a good writer in order to convey the same meaning of the source language.
